High Speed Doors: Keeping High-Cycle Operations Moving Without Interruption

Rapid roll door supply, installation and maintenance for food production, cold storage and logistics operations across Bristol, Bath and the South West.

When Every Second the Door Is Open Costs Your Business Money

A high speed door is not simply a faster version of a standard industrial door. It is a purpose-built system designed for environments where the opening is cycled tens or hundreds of times each day, where temperature separation between zones is operationally critical, where hygiene control demands that internal areas are sealed quickly between passes, or where forklift and pedestrian traffic moving at pace cannot afford to wait for a slow door to open and close. In these environments, a standard industrial door is not a compromise. It is a liability.

Brunel Doors has been supplying and installing high speed door systems for food producers, cold storage operators, pharmaceutical manufacturers, logistics businesses and industrial facilities across Bristol and the South West since 2010. High speed doors operate in demanding conditions and require a level of technical knowledge that goes beyond a standard door installation. We survey the opening, understand the operational environment and the traffic that will use the door, and specify the system that will perform reliably at the cycle frequency your facility demands.

High Speed Door Systems for Every High-Cycle Environment

High speed door systems vary significantly in their construction, their operating mechanism and the environments they are designed for. A rapid roll door for a busy logistics warehouse has different requirements to a high speed door separating production zones in a food factory, and both are different again from a clean room door in a pharmaceutical facility. We specify on the basis of the environment, the cycle frequency, the hygiene requirements and the structural conditions of the opening.
High Speed Doors

Rapid Roll Doors

The most widely installed high speed door type for logistics, warehousing and general industrial environments. Rapid roll doors open and close in seconds, using a motorised roll mechanism that retracts the flexible curtain into a hood above the opening. Opening speeds typically range from 1 to 2.5 metres per second, with closing speeds calibrated to be fast enough to limit air exchange without creating a safety hazard. The curtain is constructed from heavy-duty flexible PVC or fabric, designed to absorb incidental contact from forklift traffic without permanent damage. Most rapid roll door systems include a self-reinsertion mechanism that allows the curtain to reset automatically if it is displaced from its guides by an impact, minimising downtime in busy environments.
High Speed Doors

High Speed Roll Door

Where the operating environment demands a door with greater rigidity and insulation performance than a flexible PVC curtain can provide, a high speed roll door combines fast-action operation with the structural integrity and thermal performance of a solid panel system. The door coils into a compact drum above the opening at speeds significantly faster than a standard industrial door, providing a fully rigid barrier well suited to cold store access points, controlled environments and high-bay openings where a flexible curtain is not appropriate. These systems are more complex to specify and install than rapid roll curtain doors, and the structural conditions of the opening need careful assessment before a system is recommended.
High Speed Doors

Clean Room & Hygienic High Speed Doors

For food production, pharmaceutical manufacturing and other regulated environments where contamination control is a compliance requirement, high speed doors must meet standards beyond simple operational performance. Hygienic high speed doors are constructed from materials that can withstand regular cleaning with industrial detergents and high-pressure washdown without degradation of the curtain, the seals or the frame components. Curtain materials are selected to be smooth, non-absorbent and resistant to the specific cleaning chemicals used in the facility. Frame profiles are designed to eliminate horizontal surfaces where water and debris can accumulate. We work with the food safety and facilities teams of our clients to ensure the specification is appropriate for their HACCP plan and any applicable BRC or other accreditation requirements.
High Speed Doors

High Speed Spiral Doors

For the highest-performance applications, particularly those involving cold store access, controlled atmosphere environments or very high cycle frequencies, a spiral door provides operating speeds and seal quality that a flexible curtain system cannot match. Rigid aluminium slats coil into a spiral drum above the opening at speeds of up to 4 metres per second, providing a fully rigid door panel with excellent insulation values and an airtight perimeter seal. The absence of a flexible curtain means there is no risk of curtain displacement or damage from forklift contact. Spiral doors represent a significant capital investment, and we will only recommend them where the operational requirements of the facility genuinely justify that investment over a high-quality rapid roll or sectional alternative.

Technical Knowledge That Goes Beyond the Installation

High speed doors fail in ways that standard door installers are not equipped to diagnose or repair. Photo-electric safety beam alignment, motor encoder calibration, pneumatic drive pressure settings, curtain guide tension and electronic control card configuration are all elements of a high speed door system that require specific technical knowledge to set up correctly and maintain properly. An incorrectly calibrated high speed door is not just an operational inconvenience. In a food production environment, a door that does not close fully between passes creates a contamination risk. In a cold store, it creates an energy and compliance problem.
We have been working with high speed door systems long enough to understand the specific demands of the environments in which they operate. Our engineers carry diagnostic equipment and the most commonly required replacement components for the systems we install, and they are familiar with the control systems, the safety device requirements and the operational settings that determine whether a high speed door performs to its specification or becomes a recurring problem. We work regularly with food production facilities, cold storage operators, pharmaceutical sites and logistics businesses across Bristol, Avonmouth, Yate, Bath and the wider South West, and we understand the operational pressure these environments place on their equipment and on the contractors who maintain it.

Fast Response When a High Speed Door Goes Down

A high speed door that stops working in a busy warehouse or food production facility does not just cause inconvenience. In a cold store it creates an immediate temperature integrity problem. In a food factory it may require a production line to halt. In a logistics operation it creates a throughput bottleneck that has measurable operational cost. Response speed matters in a way that it simply does not for a roller shutter on a unit that is closed for the night.

Our engineers are based across Bristol and South Gloucestershire and we aim to reach sites across the region as quickly as possible following a callout. We carry photo-electric safety beams, control cards, motor components, curtain repair materials and guide components for the high speed door systems we install and maintain, and the majority of faults are resolved in a single visit. The specific failure modes of high speed doors, curtain displacement from guides, safety beam misalignment, encoder faults and motor drive failures, are all well understood by our engineers, which means diagnosis is fast and resolution follows quickly. A planned maintenance programme covering motor servicing, safety device testing, curtain condition assessment, guide and seal inspection and operational calibration keeps your high speed doors running reliably and reduces the likelihood of unexpected downtime.

Certified for the Demanding Environments Where High Speed Doors Operate

The environments in which high speed doors operate, food production facilities, cold stores, pharmaceutical sites and busy logistics warehouses, place specific demands on the contractors who work in them. CSCS cards confirm our engineers are formally qualified to work on commercial and industrial construction sites, which is a requirement on most managed industrial and food production sites before any contractor work can begin. IPAF certification covers installations at height in high-bay environments, where high speed doors are frequently installed at elevated openings that require powered access equipment during commissioning and maintenance. SafeContractor approval is particularly relevant for food production and pharmaceutical clients whose procurement teams require formal contractor pre-qualification before approving site access. DHF membership ensures we adhere to the industry’s highest standards for door installation and safety, and all products we specify carry UKCA certification confirming conformity with current UK safety standards.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many cycles per day can a high speed door handle?
It depends on the system. A quality rapid roll door is typically rated for between 100,000 and 300,000 cycles over its service life, which in a busy logistics environment operating 250 days a year at 100 cycles per day equates to between four and twelve years of operation before major component replacement would be expected. High speed spiral doors are rated for higher cycle counts. We will always specify a system rated for significantly more than your current cycle frequency to provide a meaningful operational margin, and we factor in likely growth in throughput when sizing the system.
What is the difference between a high speed door and a standard industrial door?
A standard industrial sectional or roller door is designed for occasional use, typically opening and closing a handful of times per day. Its components are not rated for high cycle counts, its opening speed is measured in seconds or tens of seconds rather than fractions of a second, and it provides no meaningful resistance to air exchange when used in a temperature-controlled environment. A high speed door is specifically engineered for high cycle frequency, fast opening and closing times, and in many cases effective sealing of the doorway between cycles. In a food production, cold storage or busy logistics environment, a standard industrial door will fail prematurely and will not provide the operational performance the environment requires.
Do high speed doors need planning permission?
External high speed doors on commercial and industrial premises are generally treated the same as any other industrial door for planning purposes. Most installations on industrial estates and business parks do not require planning consent. If your premises are in a location with planning sensitivity, such as a conservation area or a site with specific planning conditions, we will advise during the site survey. We always recommend confirming with the local planning authority if there is any uncertainty.
How quickly can a high speed door be repaired if it breaks down?
We aim to respond to emergency callouts across Bristol and the South West as quickly as possible, and we carry the most commonly required replacement components for the systems we install. The majority of high speed door faults, including curtain displacement, safety beam failure, motor drive issues and control card faults, are resolved in a single visit. For cold store and food production clients where a door failure has immediate operational consequences, we prioritise response accordingly. A planned maintenance programme significantly reduces the likelihood of unexpected failures by identifying and addressing wear before it becomes a breakdown.
Are high speed doors suitable for food production environments?
Yes, and in many food production facilities they are a hygiene requirement rather than an operational preference. Rapid air exchange at doorways is a contamination risk in food production environments, and a high speed door that seals the opening quickly between passes significantly reduces that risk compared to a standard industrial door left propped open or a slow-acting door that is held open by traffic. For facilities operating under BRC, SALSA or other food safety accreditation schemes, we can specify hygienic high speed door systems with appropriate materials, frame profiles and cleaning resistance to satisfy the requirements of your food safety plan.
