Security Barriers: Controlled Site Access for Commercial & Industrial Premises

Supply, installation and maintenance of rising arm barriers, security bollards and traffic management systems for commercial and industrial sites across Bristol, Bath and the South West.

Site Access Management Is About More Than a Barrier at the Gate

A security barrier controls who enters and exits your site, but a barrier installed without properly understanding how the site works creates as many problems as it solves. A rising arm barrier with an approach road that does not give drivers adequate distance to stop safely is a vehicle damage liability. A barrier with no manual override provision is a site that cannot be evacuated in an emergency. A car park barrier specified without considering the height and turning radius of the largest vehicles that will use it will be struck and damaged repeatedly. The barrier is the visible component of a site access management system, but it is the thinking behind the specification that determines whether it works.

Brunel Doors has been installing security barrier and site access management systems for commercial landlords, industrial estate operators, car park managers and private organisations across Bristol and the South West since 2010. We survey the site before recommending any product, understanding the traffic volume, vehicle types, access control requirements and emergency provisions that shape the correct specification. The result is a barrier system that works correctly from the first day of operation and continues to work reliably with a sensible maintenance programme.

Security Barrier and Traffic Management Systems We Supply and Install

The right site access product depends on the level of security required, the volume and type of vehicle traffic, the need for pedestrian separation, and whether access needs to be managed automatically or manually. We supply and install systems from industry-leading manufacturers and specify the most appropriate product for the specific requirements of each site.
Security Barriers

Rising Arm Barriers

The most widely used site access control product for car parks, commercial premises, industrial estates and private roads. A rising arm barrier controls vehicle access by raising and lowering a horizontal arm across the entrance lane, operated manually or automatically via a range of control methods including keypad, remote fob, intercom, ANPR camera or vehicle induction loop. The arm length, barrier housing design and control configuration are all selected based on the lane width, the approach distance available, the volume of daily transactions and the access control method that suits the site. For high-transaction sites such as public car parks, heavy duty barriers with high cycle rate motors and robust arm designs are essential. For private road applications with occasional use, a lighter duty system may be entirely appropriate and more cost-effective.
Security Barriers

Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) Barriers

For car parks and private sites where access is controlled by vehicle registration rather than a physical credential, an ANPR barrier system reads the licence plate of an approaching vehicle and opens the barrier automatically if the plate is on the authorised list. This removes the need for fobs, cards or keypads, eliminates the cost and administration of credential management, and provides a complete record of every vehicle entry and exit with a timestamp. ANPR barrier systems are increasingly specified by commercial landlords, private car parks and distribution sites where the ability to audit site access accurately is operationally or security-critical. We work with our clients to ensure the camera positioning, lighting conditions and barrier placement are correct for reliable plate recognition before installation is confirmed.
Security Barriers

Security Bollards

Where physical vehicle exclusion from a specific area is required, rather than access control at a single entry point, security bollards provide robust protection against both deliberate vehicle attacks and accidental incursion. Fixed security bollards prevent any vehicle access to the protected area permanently. Removable bollards allow occasional vehicle access while maintaining protection when the bollard is in place. Automatic rising bollards, operated by the same control methods as rising arm barriers, combine the protection of a fixed bollard with the flexibility of a controlled access point. We specify bollards based on the level of impact resistance required, the frequency of removal or operation, and the aesthetic requirements of the installation.
Security Barriers

Traffic Management & Safety Equipment

An effective site access system typically includes more than the barrier or bollard itself. Vehicle induction loops embedded in the road surface detect the presence of a vehicle and can automate barrier operation without a driver needing to interact with any control device. Safety light beams prevent a barrier arm from lowering while a vehicle or pedestrian is within the danger zone. Traffic lights coordinate vehicle movement at shared entrance and exit points. Intercom systems allow remote communication between site staff and drivers or visitors at unmanned entrance points. We can specify and install the complete access management system as an integrated package, or advise on which components to add to an existing barrier installation that is missing adequate safety or access control provision.

The Right Barrier Starts With Understanding How Your Site Actually Works

Security barrier installations that cause problems almost always have the same root cause: the site was not properly understood before the product was specified. An approach road that is too short for a barrier with a slow raise time. A lane that is too narrow for the turning radius of delivery vehicles. A control system that requires a driver to lower their window in all weathers to press a button that is positioned at the wrong height for most vehicles. These are not unusual problems. They are the predictable consequences of a product being selected from a catalogue without someone first understanding how the site works.

Our starting point on every barrier project is a site visit. We look at the approach road geometry, the lane width, the gradient if any, the lighting conditions, the surface drainage, the proximity of the barrier to adjacent structures, and the visibility of the operator or camera to the approaching vehicle. We understand the volume and type of traffic that uses the entrance, the frequency of access events through a typical day, and whether there are specific vehicle types, such as articulated lorries or abnormal loads, that need to use the entrance periodically. That process is what allows us to specify with confidence.

We are SafeContractor approved, which is a significant practical benefit for commercial landlords, facilities management companies and public sector organisations that manage multiple sites and require formal contractor pre-qualification before work can begin. Our CSCS-carded engineers carry out all installations directly, with no subcontractors involved at any stage.

Barrier Maintenance & Emergency Callout Across Bristol & the South West

A barrier that stops working at a busy car park entrance or a high-traffic commercial site creates immediate operational problems. Vehicles queue, drivers become frustrated, and if the barrier has failed in the closed position, the site may become inaccessible. Our engineers are based across Bristol and South Gloucestershire and we respond to emergency callouts across the region, carrying the most commonly required motor components, control cards, arm assemblies and loop detection equipment for the barrier systems we install and maintain.

Planned maintenance keeps barriers reliable and reduces the likelihood of unexpected failures. A maintenance visit covers motor and gearbox condition, arm balance and limit switch calibration, safety light beam alignment and function, induction loop sensitivity, control system testing, housing and foundation condition, and an operational test of all access control devices. For sites with ANPR systems, camera lens cleaning, software updates and recognition rate testing are included. We can bring your barrier system, along with any roller shutters or industrial doors on the same site, under a single planned maintenance contract for straightforward contractor management. We maintain barrier systems across Bristol, Bath, Avonmouth, Yate, Thornbury and the wider South West.

Pre-Qualified and Ready to Work on Commercial and Public Sector Sites

Security barrier installation on commercial and public sector sites frequently requires formal contractor pre-qualification before work can begin. Our SafeContractor approval satisfies the vetting requirements of most facilities management companies, commercial landlords, local authorities and NHS trusts operating managed contractor approval processes, which means there is no delay while pre-qualification is processed before a project can be confirmed. CSCS cards confirm our engineers are qualified to work on commercial and industrial construction sites. DHF membership underpins the standards we apply to all our installation work. For installations requiring work at height, including barrier housing mounting on elevated structures, our engineers hold IPAF certification. All products we supply carry UKCA certification confirming conformity with current UK safety standards.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between a manual and an automatic rising arm barrier?
A manual barrier requires a person to physically raise and lower the arm to control vehicle access. This is appropriate for sites with low transaction volumes and a staffed entrance point. An automatic barrier uses a motor to raise and lower the arm, controlled by a remote fob, keypad, induction loop, ANPR camera or intercom system. Automatic barriers are more practical for high-transaction sites, unmanned entrances and any location where drivers cannot reliably access a manual control. We will recommend the appropriate operation type based on the transaction volume, staffing arrangements and access control requirements of your site.
Do I need planning permission for a security barrier?
For most commercial and industrial sites, a rising arm barrier does not require planning permission as it is considered a minor operational structure rather than a permanent building. However, if your site is in a conservation area, if the barrier involves significant groundworks or a permanent structure above a certain height, or if there are specific planning conditions attached to your site, consent may be required. We will advise during the site survey and we always recommend confirming with the local planning authority if there is any uncertainty about your specific location.
How do induction loops work with automatic barriers?
An induction loop is a loop of wire embedded in the road surface, typically at the approach point and the exit point of a barrier. The loop detects the presence of a metal vehicle by sensing the change in the electromagnetic field created by the vehicle passing over it. When a vehicle is detected, the loop sends a signal to the barrier control system, which can be configured to open the barrier automatically, trigger a safety hold to prevent the arm lowering while a vehicle is under it, or alert an operator. Loops are more reliable than infrared sensors in outdoor environments and do not require line-of-sight between the sensor and the vehicle.
How often should security barriers be serviced?
We recommend an annual planned maintenance visit for barriers in low to moderate use, and twice-yearly visits for high-transaction barriers in busy car parks or high-traffic commercial entrances. The components that wear most quickly in high-transaction barriers are the motor and gearbox, the arm balance spring, the limit switches and the safety beam emitters and receivers. Identifying and addressing wear during a planned maintenance visit is significantly cheaper than an emergency breakdown repair, and avoids the operational disruption of an unplanned failure.
Can you install a barrier at a site with uneven ground or a gradient on the approach?
Yes, though a gradient on the approach requires careful consideration during the specification process. A steep gradient affects the stopping distance of vehicles approaching the barrier, which in turn affects the required raise speed of the barrier arm and the safe positioning of the control device relative to the barrier housing. An uneven or poorly drained surface may require groundworks before the barrier foundation is installed. We assess all of these factors during the site survey and factor them into the specification before any product is recommended.
